Within minutes of her presentation, you know you are hearing from an expert in the field, who has vast knowledge of the world of trafficking, as well as intimate accounts of victim stories. She shares pertinent information from the perspective of the trafficker, as well as the survivor, which is indispensable to anyone working in this field. Masayo's presentation gave our staff a perspective and information that led to a significant shift in viewpoints, as well as strategies to serve victims of trafficking. What made Masayo Halpin so amazing and brilliant is her love for her work, her commitment to the community, and her ability to connect to survivors. In my years of working with various law enforcement and government entities, she stood out. As a member of the Oregon Foreign Born Human Trafficking team, I had the honor of calling Masayo on a case that required emergency attention and care. It involved a foreign born trafficking situation involving a child. When Masayo showed up, it was not with a list of questions that are often asked, but rather a very victim-centered and kind approach of listening and learning from the survivor. She did not worry about the time being spent, but rather focused on whether or not the questions would traumatize the young person before us. When she presents, whether before adults, law enforcement, business people, or the general public, it is clear that she cares about the work and wants a better system for the most vulnerable in the community. Being an FBI Agent who has worked the front lines with advocates, victims assistance personnel, lawyers, and so many others that may encounter victims, she has always made herself accessible and her answers were always on point. Working with her and learning from her has taught me to be a better advocate, attorney and human being.
